Salah Hints at Egyptian Team Retirement in Near Future
Mohamed Salah might be eyeing early retirement from the Egyptian national team.
The 29-year-old Pharaohs skipper – who also plays for English team Liverpool – gave a consolatory speech in the locker room after they lost 3-1 on penalties to Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Tuesday, 29 March.
The defeat saw the African giants crash out of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year, a development which has apparently also made Salah reconsider his future plans.
He told his team-mates of how proud he was to have played alongside such “dedicated” players.
“I played with the previous generation with [Egyptian legends Wael Gomaa and Mohamed Aboutrika], then with Abdallah El-Said and the following generation,” he said. “And I can say that I’m happy with the current generation.”
He concluded: “There’s not much I can say, but it was a privilege to play alongside you, whether I’ll be here or not afterward.”
The defeat is doubly humbling as both teams had previously squared off in the African Cup of Nations final in February, and Senegal came up the winner also on the back of penalties.
